Staind is an American rock band from Springfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The original lineup brought together vocalist and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis, lead guitarist Mike Mushok, bassist and backing vocalist Johnny April, and drummer Jon Wysocki. With the exception of Wysocki’s departure in 2011 — after which Sal Giancarelli took over on drums — the band’s core membership has remained remarkably stable. Staind has released eight studio albums, beginning with Tormented (1996) and followed by Dysfunction (1999), Break the Cycle (2001), 14 Shades of Grey (2003), Chapter V (2005), The Illusion of Progress (2008), Staind (2011), and Confessions of the Fallen (2023). The band reached its commercial peak in the early 2000s. Their breakthrough album Break the Cycle achieved five‑times platinum status in the United States and produced the massive crossover hit “It’s Been Awhile,” which reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Break the Cycle and the two albums that followed all debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while the next two releases also landed within the top five. Other major singles — including “Fade,” “For You,” “Price to Play,” “So Far Away,” and “Right Here” — further cemented Staind’s presence across both rock and mainstream charts. During the 2010s, the band’s activity became more intermittent. Aaron Lewis pursued a solo career in country music, while Mike Mushok joined the hard rock group Saint Asonia. Despite these outside projects, Staind has continued to reunite for tours and new music, maintaining a loyal fanbase built over nearly three decades.
