Peter Brian Gabriel (born 13 February 1950) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and human rights activist. He first came to prominence as the original frontman of the rock band Genesis. Gabriel left the band in 1975 and launched a solo career, beginning with the hit single “Solsbury Hill.” After releasing four successful studio albums — all titled Peter Gabriel — his fifth album, So (1986), became his best‑selling release. So is certified triple platinum in the UK and five‑times platinum in the US. Its most successful single, “Sledgehammer,” won a record nine MTV Video Music Awards in 1987. A Time report in 2011 stated that “Sledgehammer” was the most‑played music video in MTV’s history. Gabriel went on to release Us (1992), OVO (2000) and Up (2002), the latter marking his final solo album for more than two decades. He recorded “Down to Earth” for Pixar’s WALL‑E (2008), released the orchestral cover album Scratch My Back (2010), and followed it with And I’ll Scratch Yours (2013), featuring other artists covering his songs. He toured extensively, including the Back to Front Tour (2012–14) and the Rock Paper Scissors Tour with Sting (2016). In 2023, Gabriel released his long‑awaited solo album I/O, issuing its tracks according to the lunar cycle and supporting it with I/O The Tour. He has continued this lunar‑cycle release pattern for the follow‑up album O/I (2026). A long‑time advocate for world music, Gabriel co‑founded the WOMAD festival in 1982 and has promoted global artists through his Real World Records label. He has also been a pioneer in digital music distribution, co‑founding OD2, one of the earliest online music download platforms.
