Guru Guru is a German krautrock band formed in 1968 under the name The Guru Guru Groove by Mani Neumeier (drums), Uli Trepte (bass) and Eddy Naegeli (guitar). Naegeli was later replaced by American guitarist Jim Kennedy. After Kennedy collapsed on stage due to a serious illness, Ax Genrich joined the band, completing the classic Guru Guru lineup in time for their 1970 debut album. Guru Guru had strong ties to the free‑jazz scene, partly through their collaborations with Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer, and through Neumeier’s background as an award‑winning jazz drummer. Their sound was also shaped by psychedelic rock influences, including Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, The Rolling Stones and early Pink Floyd. The band maintained close musical relationships with groups such as Amon Düül, Can and Xhol Caravan, often participating in extended jam sessions with them. Mani Neumeier,Frontman (drummer and vocalist) is known for his highly individual drumming style and his long‑standing presence in the European jazz‑rock scene. Beyond Guru Guru, he has been involved in numerous projects.
