Perpetuum Jazzile

Perpetuum Jazzile is a Slovenian musical group best known for its a cappella arrangement of Toto’s “Africa”. A video of their live performance, released in May 2009, had received nearly 22 million views on YouTube by 2013 and has continued to attract millions more since. The group was founded in 1983 as the Gaudeamus Chamber Choir and has always included both male and female singers. As of 2025, the ensemble consisted of 45 performers, with 26 women and 19 men. Although they occasionally collaborate with the Slovenian Radio and Television Big Band, most of their performances are a cappella. Perpetuum Jazzile was founded by Marko Tiran, who led the Gaudeamus Choir for more than 17 years. In 2001, artistic leadership passed to Tomaž Kozlevčar. During his decade-long tenure, the group adopted its new name and achieved international recognition. Peder Karlsson served as artistic leader from 2011 to 2014. The group is currently guided by a vocal coaching team, and its manager is Gvido Polanc. In 2006, the group recorded the album Čudna noč (Strange Night), released by Dallas Records. Their performance of “Africa” received praise from the song’s original co‑writer, David Paich, and Toto invited the group to join them for a performance at a 2011 concert near Udine, Italy. That same year, Perpetuum Jazzile embarked on a world tour that included Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Canada and the United States, performing to sold‑out venues.
