HUMAN FACTOR is a Russian instrumental rock group formed in late 2011. The band was established by drummer Konstantin Shtirlitz and bassist Alexander Meshcheryakov, both formerly of the group Infront, together with keyboardist and guitarist Sergei Volkov, known for his work as composer and arranger with Kaftan Smeha, and guitarist Ivan Ivanov, previously a member of Hagi Tragger. The group describes its musical direction as a contemporary instrumental crossover incorporating elements of space rock, progressive rock and alternative rock. Their sound is characterized by structured rhythmic foundations, extended instrumental development and a dense, layered production style. HUMAN FACTOR’s work often emphasizes long-form compositions built around gradual dynamic shifts, electronic textures and guitar-driven motifs. Their approach combines atmospheric passages with more forceful sections, creating a style situated within modern instrumental post‑rock and space‑rock traditions. The band’s early releases introduced their characteristic blend of rhythmic intensity and melodic development. Tracks such as “Riding the Giants,” “Opal Voids” and “Sagittarius A” illustrate their use of repetitive structures, synthesizer-driven soundscapes and evolving crescendos. Their music frequently incorporates electronic elements, ambient introductions and thematic references to science‑fiction and cosmic imagery. HUMAN FACTOR continues to be active within the Russian progressive and instrumental rock scene, drawing on the combined backgrounds of musicians from Infront, Kaftan Smeha and Hagi Tragger.
