Timothy Blake (born 6 February 1952 in Shepherd’s Bush, London) is an English keyboardist, synthesist, vocalist and composer, best known for his work with Gong, Hawkwind, and for his synthesizer‑and‑light performances as Crystal Machine, created in collaboration with French light artist Patrice Warrener. Blake first met Daevid Allen at Marquee Studios in 1971, where Allen was recording his debut solo album Banana Moon. At the end of the sessions, Allen invited Blake to become Gong’s sound mixer, but Blake chose instead to focus on his own music. He eventually joined Gong full‑time in September 1972 as the band’s synthesizer player, becoming one of the early musicians to bring synthesizers from the studio onto the stage. He appears on all three albums of Gong’s Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy — Flying Teapot, Angel’s Egg and You. Blake is the only composer besides the Allen/Smyth partnership to contribute to all three albums, making him one of the group’s most significant writers. He left Gong in early 1975. Blake then began a solo career under the name Crystal Machine, releasing two albums: Crystal Machine (1977) and Blake’s New Jerusalem (1978). He also performed extensively across Europe and Japan, with his audiovisual shows culminating in an appearance at the 1979 Glastonbury Festival.
