Psycheground

The Psycheground Group was an Italian studio project whose sole album, Psychedelic and Underground Music, was originally released in 1971 on the Lupus Records label (catalogue number LUS 207). For decades, almost nothing was known about the musicians involved, and the LP — recognizable by its red cover featuring a stylized male face with a multicolored bandana — circulated as a mysterious collector’s item. Only in more recent years has the album’s background been clarified. The recordings were made by members of Nuova Idea, prior to the release of that band’s own debut. The compositions were written by several prominent figures in Italian music: Gian Piero Reverberi, known for producing some of Le Orme’s most progressive albums, and three major composers from the Italian library‑music scene — Sandro Brugnolini, Massimo Catalano and Stefano TorossiPsychedelic and Underground Music is an almost entirely instrumental album, featuring occasional vocal harmonies but no lead vocals. The music blends rhythm & blues, pop, and psychedelic rock, with a sound strongly influenced by contemporary British styles. This British character was so pronounced that the group was long assumed to be an English band rather than an Italian studio ensemble. Because of its obscurity, unusual origins and distinctive sound, the album is often cited as a hidden gem within the Italian psychedelic and underground music tradition.
