Trans-Siberian Orchestra

Trans‑Siberian Orchestra (TSO) is an American neoclassical metal band founded in 1996 by producer, composer and lyricist Paul O’Neill, who brought together Jon Oliva and Al Pitrelli (both from Savatage) and keyboardist/co‑producer Robert Kinkel to form the core creative team. The band rose to wider popularity after they began touring in 1999, following the completion of their second album, The Christmas Attic, the previous year. In 2007, The Washington Post described them as “an arena‑rock juggernaut” and characterized their sound as “Pink Floyd meets Yes and The Who at Radio City Music Hall.” TSO has sold more than ten million concert tickets and over ten million albums. TSO has released a series of rock operas, including Christmas Eve and Other Stories, The Christmas Attic, Beethoven’s Last Night, The Lost Christmas Eve, the two‑disc Night Castle, and Letters from the Labyrinth. The band is also known for its extensive charity work and elaborate live shows, featuring a string section, synchronized lighting, lasers, moving trusses, video screens and theatrical effects. Both Billboard Magazine and Pollstar have ranked TSO among the top 25 ticket‑selling bands of the first decade of the 2000s. Their path to success was unusual: according to O’Neill, TSO became the first major rock band to go directly to theaters and arenas, never playing clubs, never opening for another act, and never using an opening act themselves. Paul O’Neill previously managed and produced artists such as Aerosmith, Humble Pie, AC/DC, Joan Jett and Scorpions, and later produced and co‑wrote albums for Savatage, where he began working with Kinkel, Pitrelli and Oliva. Oliva had left Savatage to focus on family and personal matters. O’Neill’s own first steps into rock music came in the 1970s, when he formed the progressive rock band Slowburn, serving as lyricist and co‑composer. Their intended debut album was recorded at Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios and engineered by Dave Wittman.
