Agnes Strange was an English hard‑rock and blues‑rock band active in the early to mid‑1970s, originally based in the Southampton area. The group developed a sound that blended heavy rock with elements of Chicago‑style blues, and became known for their powerful live performances and distinctive guitar‑driven style. The band emerged around 1972 in the Southampton region. From the outset, the musicians aimed to create an identity rooted in their own songwriting, combining contemporary rock influences with blues phrasing. In late 1974, the group relocated to London to work under the management of the Dick James Organization, a move intended to support wider professional development. During this period, Agnes Strange rehearsed at Rownhams House, a historic estate near Southampton. The band was frequently heard practicing at high volume outside office hours. The location itself has a long and varied history — from Mesolithic activity (c. 8000–6000 BC) to medieval ownership by Norman families and later the Knights Templar — a detail sometimes cited in colourful accounts of the band’s unusual atmosphere and sound. A second version of the band formed in the mid‑1970s, consisting of: John Westwood – guitar, vocals, Alan Green – bass, Dave Rodwell – drums. This lineup secured a recording contract with Birds Nest Records, a label distributed by Pye Records. Their debut album, Strange Flavour (1975), featured a set of original hard‑rock and blues‑rock compositions. Although competently performed and representative of the era’s underground rock scene, the album did not achieve mainstream commercial success. Agnes Strange disbanded shortly after the release of Strange Flavour. Despite the group’s brief lifespan, its members remained active in the Hampshire music circuit, contributing to local bands and live venues. Over time, the band’s sole album has attracted interest among collectors of obscure 1970s British rock.
