During his architecture studies in Delft, Erik Visser met the Hague‑based flutist Peter Weekers in the early 1970s. In 1978 the two musicians founded Flairck. After their first series of performances at the Appeltheater in The Hague, interest grew rapidly and record companies competed for the chance to release the group’s debut. Their first album, Variaties op een Dame (Polygram), became a major success, earning platinum status and an Edison Award. From that point on, Flairck began working professionally. The follow‑up album, Gevecht met de Engel (1980), also achieved gold status and another Edison, and the group was soon filling theatres in many countries. Flairck became one of the first music ensembles to enter the Dutch theatre circuit, creating numerous music‑theatre productions over the years. They collaborated with ballet companies, acrobatic performers and a wide range of guest musicians. Tours followed in the Netherlands, Indonesia and Germany, along with concerts featuring various symphony orchestras in Europe and the Far East. In 1982, the group performed a series of concerts in France with singer‑songwriter Georges Moustaki, who described Flairck’s sound as “chamber music for the open air.”
