Stoneground was an American rock band formed in 1970 in Concord, California. Originally a trio, the group expanded into a ten-piece ensemble by the time of their self-titled debut album in 1971. The band appeared in the films Medicine Ball Caravan (1971) and Dracula A.D. 1972 (1972), and released three albums before lead singer Sal Valentino departed in 1973. Following Valentino’s departure, band members Cory Lerios, Steve Price and David Jenkins left to form the pop-rock group Pablo Cruise. Stoneground continued performing until 1982, with Tim Barnes and Annie Sampson remaining from the band’s early lineup. In 2003, Barnes and Price revived Stoneground and released a new studio album the following year. Stoneground was founded in the San Francisco Bay Area suburb of Concord, California. The original lineup consisted of Tim Barnes (guitar, vocals), Craig Randall (bass) and Mike Mau (drums). Through manager Tom Donahue, the band was joined by former Beau Brummels vocalist Sal Valentino and guitarist/bassist John Blakely. Four female vocalists, Annie Sampson, Lynne Hughes, Lydia Phillips and Deirdre LaPorte, were also added, helping create the group’s distinctive large-band format. While touring in the United States, Stoneground expanded further, adding bassist Kit Thomas. After the band traveled to England, Thomas was replaced by bassist and keyboardist Pete Sears, who toured with the group in the UK and France. During this period, the band performed at the Canterbury Festival and recorded material at London’s Trident Studios. Sears later went on to perform with several notable acts, including Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna. Stoneground’s self-titled debut album, released in 1971, featured seven different lead vocalists across ten tracks, reflecting the band’s unusually diverse lineup and eclectic musical approach. The album was produced by Tom Donahue, with Sal Valentino contributing to production on several songs. Following the recording sessions, Pete Sears left the band and was replaced by bassist Mario Cipollina. Critical reception was mixed but generally positive, with reviewers praising the group’s energy, ambitious scope and vocal talent while noting the challenges of managing such a large ensemble.
