Mellow Candle were an Irish progressive folk rock band active between 1968 and 1973. Although their career was short-lived, they became highly influential within the progressive folk movement. The band released only one studio album, Swaddling Songs, in 1972, which is now regarded as one of the finest folk-rock albums of the era. A collection of demos and session recordings made between 1969 and 1971 was later released as The Virgin Prophet in 1996. Mellow Candle began while founding members Clodagh Simonds, Alison Bools and Maria White were still teenagers attending school. Their debut single, “Feelin’ High”, was released in 1968 on Simon Napier-Bell’s SNB Records label. Following Maria White’s departure, the band re-formed with an expanded lineup featuring guitarist Dave Williams, bassist Frank Boylan and drummer William Murray. In 1972 they released their only studio album, Swaddling Songs. The album received little commercial attention upon release, and shortly afterward Frank Boylan was replaced by Steve Borrill, formerly of Spirogyra. The group eventually disbanded in 1973. Over the following decades, Swaddling Songs gained cult status among collectors and progressive folk enthusiasts. Original vinyl copies became highly sought after, and the album was repeatedly reissued by various labels. Its reputation continued to grow, and it is now widely considered a classic of the progressive folk genre. The album’s legacy was celebrated in 2022 with the Irish radio documentary Swaddling Songs at 50. A 50th anniversary edition was released in 2023.
