Horslips were an Irish Celtic rock band known for composing, arranging and performing music inspired by traditional Irish airs, jigs and reels. They are widely regarded as the founding fathers of Celtic rock due to their groundbreaking fusion of traditional Irish music with rock, a style that would later influence numerous artists both in Ireland and internationally. Formed in 1970, Horslips developed a distinctive sound that combined Celtic mythology, folk traditions and progressive rock. The band’s name originated from a humorous spoonerism of “The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse,” which became “The Four Poxmen of The Horslypse.” Although commercial success largely eluded them during the 1970s, Horslips gradually gained recognition as one of the most important and influential bands in the Celtic rock genre. Following their initial retirement in 1980, interest in their music experienced a revival during the late 1990s. The band reunited periodically between 2004 and 2012, performing selected concerts and releasing both live and studio recordings before playing their final shows in August 2012. Horslips were pioneers of Celtic rock, blending traditional Irish folk music with progressive rock, hard rock and mythology-inspired storytelling. Formed in 1970, the band created a unique sound that helped define an entire genre, influencing generations of Celtic and folk-rock musicians. Albums such as The Táin, The Book of Invasions and The Unfortunate Cup of Tea remain essential listening for fans of adventurous 1970s rock.
