Swallow the Sun is a Finnish death‑doom band founded in 2000 by guitarist and primary songwriter Juha Raivio. Known for their blend of crushing doom, melodic death metal and atmospheric melancholy, the band occasionally incorporates elements of gothic and black metal. The current lineup features Raivio alongside vocalist Mikko Kotamäki, drummer Juuso Raatikainen, guitarist Juho Räihä, and bassist Matti Honkonen. As of 2026, Swallow the Sun has released nine studio albums, a triple album, an EP, a demo, a live album and seven singles. The band’s name reflects the long, dark Finnish winters during which the sun can disappear for months, and also draws on Nordic mythology where creatures devour the sun as a sign of the world’s end. Swallow the Sun began in early 2000 when Juha Raivio and drummer Pasi Pasanen — both previously active in Plutonium Orange — started writing together. Among their earliest compositions was “Through Her Silvery Body,” which later appeared on their first demo, Out of This Gloomy Light. In 2001, the lineup expanded with the arrival of guitarist Markus Jämsen, whom Raivio and Pasanen already knew from earlier projects. Vocalist Mikko Kotamäki from Funeris Nocturnum soon joined, followed by keyboardist Aleksi Munter and bassist Matti Honkonen, also from Funeris Nocturnum.
