King Crimson

King Crimson are an English progressive‑rock band formed in London in 1968 by Robert Fripp, Michael Giles, Greg Lake, Ian McDonald and Peter Sinfield. Guitarist and bandleader Fripp has remained the only constant member throughout the group’s long history. King Crimson drew on a wide range of musical influences, incorporating elements of classical music, jazz, folk, heavy metal, gamelan, blues, industrial, electronic and experimental styles. They became one of the most influential bands of the early 1970s progressive‑rock movement, inspiring contemporaries such as Yes and Genesis, and continue to influence artists across many genres. The band has developed a large cult following, particularly in the 21st century. Their debut album, In the Court of the Crimson King (1969), remains their most commercially successful and influential release and is frequently cited as one of the defining works of the progressive‑rock genre. After the original lineup dissolved, the next two albums — In the Wake of Poseidon and Lizard (both 1970) — were recorded during a period of significant personnel changes. A more stable lineup featuring Fripp, Sinfield, Mel Collins, Boz Burrell and Ian Wallace recorded Islands in 1971.
