Black Uhuru

Black Uhuru is a Jamaican reggae group formed in 1972, originally under the name Uhuru (Swahili for “freedom”). The band has undergone numerous line‑up changes throughout its history, with Derrick “Duckie” Simpson serving as the group’s central figure. Their most successful period came in the 1980s, highlighted by the album Anthem, which won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985. Black Uhuru was formed in the Waterhouse district of Kingston in 1972 with the original line‑up of Garth Dennis, Don Carlos, and Derrick “Duckie” Simpson. Their first releases included a cover of The Impressions’ “Romancing to the Folk Song” and the single “Time Is on Our Side”. Neither achieved commercial success, and the group split up shortly afterward. Carlos pursued a solo career, while Dennis later joined The Wailing Souls. Simpson also briefly worked with The Wailing Souls before assembling a new version of Uhuru with Errol Nelson (of The Jayes) and Michael Rose, adopting the name Black Sounds Uhuru. Their debut album, Love Crisis, produced by Prince Jammy, was released in 1977. Nelson returned to The Jayes in late 1977 and was replaced in 1978 by Sandra “Puma” Jones, a social worker from South Carolina who had previously performed with Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus and the group Mama Africa. With this line‑up, the band adopted the name Black Uhuru, the name under which they would gain international recognition. The group began an extensive collaboration with Sly and Robbie, resulting in a series of successful singles, including “General Penitentiary”, a re‑recording of Rose’s solo track “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner”, and “Shine Eye Gal”, which featured guest guitarist Keith Richards.
