Last in Line is a British rock band formed in 2012 by former members of Dio’s original lineup. The group takes its name from Dio’s 1984 album The Last in Line. After the death of Ronnie James Dio in 2010, drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Vivian Campbell and keyboardist Claude Schnell reunited and brought in vocalist Andrew Freeman to perform the classic Dio material they had originally recorded. Between February 2016 and March 2023, the band released three studio albums of original music, recorded without Schnell and, on the last two albums, without Bain. Dio was formed in October 1982 in the United States by former Black Sabbath members Ronnie James Dio (vocals) and Vinny Appice (drums), joined by bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Vivian Campbell. Their debut album Holy Diver appeared in May 1983. Since Dio and Bain had handled the keyboard parts in the studio, they recruited Claude Schnell for live performances during the Holy Diver tour, and he later became a full member. The band’s first recording as a five‑piece was 1984’s The Last in Line. They followed it with Sacred Heart (1985) and The Dio E.P. (1986) before Campbell was dismissed.
