Midnight Oil (informally known as “The Oils”) are an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1972. The group consists of Peter Garrett (vocals, harmonica), Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboards) and Martin Rotsey (guitar). The lineup also included bassist Bones Hillman and drummer/vocalist Rob Hirst until their deaths in 2020 and 2026 respectively. Hirst was one of the band’s founding members. Midnight Oil released their self‑titled debut album in 1978 and developed a strong cult following in Australia despite limited mainstream media support. They gained wider popularity across Australasia with the release of 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (1982), which produced the singles “Power and the Passion” and “US Forces”, and helped the band attract attention in the United States. Their first Australian number‑one album came with Red Sails in the Sunset (1984), followed by a six‑week run at the top of the Australian singles chart with the EP Species Deceases (1985). The band achieved global recognition with the 1987 album Diesel and Dust. Its singles “The Dead Heart” and “Beds Are Burning” highlighted the struggles of Indigenous Australians, with the latter reaching number one in several countries. Midnight Oil continued their international success with Blue Sky Mining (1990) and Earth and Sun and Moon (1993), each supported by major hit singles—“Blue Sky Mine” and “Truganini”. They remained a strong presence on the Australian album charts until their disbandment in 2002.
