The John Butler Trio was an Australian roots‑rock band led by guitarist, singer and songwriter John Butler. The group formed in Fremantle in 1998 with Butler joined by Jason McGann on drums and Gavin Shoesmith on bass. Over the years the lineup shifted: by 2009 the trio featured Butler, bassist Byron Luiters, and drummer/percussionist Nicky Bomba, who was later replaced by Grant Gerathy in 2013. When both Luiters and Gerathy left in early 2019, the band welcomed bassist OJ Newcomb and drummer Terepai Richmond (also known for his work with the Whitlams), along with touring musician Elana Stone on keyboards, percussion and backing vocals. The trio’s second studio album, Three (2001), reached the Australian Top 30 and earned platinum certification. Their next three albums — Sunrise Over Sea (2004), Grand National (2007) and April Uprising (2010) — all debuted at number one on the Australian charts and each achieved platinum sales. Their first live album, Living 2001–2002 (2003), also went platinum, while their second live release, Live at St. Gallen (2005), earned gold status. Since 2002, the band’s releases have been issued through Jarrah Records, an independent label co‑owned by Butler, the West Australian folk group The Waifs, and their shared manager Philip Stevens. The trio’s final studio album, Home, arrived in 2018.
