Earth, Wind & Fire

Earth, Wind & Fire (often abbreviated as EW&F or EWF) are an American band formed in Chicago, Illinois, in 1969. Their music spans a wide range of styles, including jazz, R&B, soul, funk, disco, pop, Latin, and Afro‑pop. With more than 90 million records sold worldwide, they rank among the most successful bands in music history. The group was created by Maurice White, evolving out of his earlier project, the Salty Peppers. Their long career includes a hiatus between mid‑1984 and mid‑1987. Over the years, the lineup has featured many notable musicians, including Verdine White, Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson, Larry Dunn, Al McKay, Roland Bautista, Robert Brookins, Sonny Emory, Ronnie Laws, Sheldon Reynolds, and Andrew Woolfolk. Earth, Wind & Fire are recognized for their signature kalimba sound, their powerful and intricate horn section, their energetic and visually striking live performances, and the vocal contrast between Philip Bailey’s soaring falsetto and Maurice White’s warm tenor.
