Illusion were a British progressive rock band formed in 1977. The group released two studio albums, Out of the Mist (1977) and Illusion (1978) on Island Records before disbanding in 1979. A third release, Enchanted Caress, consisting of demo recordings intended for a proposed third album, was issued in 1990. Illusion began as an intended reunion of the original lineup of Renaissance. Because Renaissance was still active under that name, the musicians chose the name Illusion, which had also been the title of Renaissance’s 1971 album. Before the band officially came together, guitarist and vocalist Keith Relf recorded a number of demos with the group. Following his death, the remaining members decided to continue the project. John Knightsbridge joined as guitarist, while Eddie McNeill took over drumming duties, allowing Jim McCarty to focus on acoustic guitar and vocals. The core lineup consisted of: Jane Relf – vocals, Jim McCarty – vocals, acoustic guitar, John Hawken – keyboards, Louis Cennamo – bass, John Knightsbridge – guitar and Eddie McNeill – drums. In 2001, Jim McCarty, Louis Cennamo, John Hawken and Jane Relf reunited once again to record Through the Fire under the name Renaissance Illusion.
