Edie Brickell & New Bohemians – The Best off Music

Edie Brickell is an American singer‑songwriter who emerged in the late 1980s and became known for reviving a relaxed, folk‑rock sound at a time when mainstream pop culture leaned heavily toward polished, material‑driven aesthetics. With her band New Bohemians, she achieved major commercial success in 1988 with the Top Ten single “What I Am,” a laid‑back, introspective track that became one of the defining songs of its era. Although the band did not replicate the chart impact of that hit, its enduring popularity helped sustain Brickell’s long and varied career. Following the early‑1990s breakup of New Bohemians, Brickell pursued solo work and later experienced renewed visibility in the 2010s. She recorded with the Gaddabouts and collaborated on several albums with Steve Martin, a period that ultimately led to the reunion of New Bohemians and the release of Rocket (2018) and Hunter and the Dog Star (2021). Brickell was born and raised in Oak Cliff, a neighborhood in Dallas, Texas. She attended the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, a school known for producing numerous notable musicians. She did not begin performing publicly until her time at Southern Methodist University, where she was encouraged to sing with New Bohemians, a group that included several fellow Booker T. Washington alumni.
