Espers were a psychedelic folk group from Philadelphia, formed in 2002 by Greg Weeks, Meg Baird and Brooke Sietinsons during the rise of the early‑2000s indie folk movement. What began as a trio gradually expanded into a six‑piece lineup with the addition of Otto Hauser, Helena Espvall and Chris Smith. The band’s self‑titled debut appeared in 2004 on Time‑Lag Records. A year later they issued The Weed Tree, a collection of reinterpretations ranging from Nico to The Durutti Column and Blue Öyster Cult, filtered through the group’s atmospheric folk sound. Their next album of original material, II, was released in 2006 on Drag City, followed by their final studio album, III, in October 2009. Espers briefly reunited in 2018 for three performances and discussed the possibility of new music, ultimately choosing not to pursue it. Drag City reissued the band’s first two albums in 2020, bringing renewed attention to their early work.
