Haken (/ˈheɪkən/) are an English progressive metal band formed in 2007 by multi‑instrumentalist Richard Henshall, guitarist Matthew Marshall, and vocalist Ross Jennings. While Henshall, Marshall, and Jennings first had the idea of forming Haken in 2004, they chose to focus on developing their instrumental skills and songwriting before starting the band. After recruiting additional members three years later, they released the demo Enter the 5th Dimension in 2008, signed with Sensory Records, and issued their debut album Aquarius in 2010. As of 2025, they have released seven studio albums, two EPs, and two live albums. Haken performing live in 2009. From left to right: Henshall, Jennings, Hearne, and Thomas MacLean. Richard Henshall, Matthew Marshall, and Ross Jennings grew up together and first conceived the idea of forming Haken in 2004, when they regularly played in informal “bedroom jam” sessions. Henshall has mentioned that “Haken” was the name of a fictional character he and some friends created during their school years, influenced by alcohol or weed. At the time, the three treated the jams as a hobby, but they later decided to focus on studying their instruments and reunited three years later to form the band. Early on, Jennings parted ways with Henshall and Marshall because their guitar skills had surpassed his own. He was later invited back as a dedicated vocalist. The lineup was completed with keyboardist Pete Jones, whom they met on an online forum, along with Jones’ friend Raymond Hearne. To‑Mera guitarist Thomas MacLean joined as the band’s bassist.
