Dave Grusin (born June 26, 1934) is an American composer, arranger, producer, jazz pianist and bandleader. He is widely recognized for his extensive work in film and television scoring, as well as for his contributions to contemporary jazz. Over the course of his career, Grusin has received numerous honors, including one Academy Award and ten Grammy Awards. He was a frequent collaborator of director Sydney Pollack, composing the music for several of Pollack’s major films, including Three Days of the Condor (1975), Absence of Malice (1981), Tootsie (1982), The Firm (1993) and Random Hearts (1999). In 1978, Grusin co‑founded GRP Records with Larry Rosen, becoming an early advocate of digital recording technologies. Grusin was born in Littleton, Colorado, to Henri Grusin and Rosabelle (née de Poyster) Grusin. His family traces its heritage to the Gruzinsky branch of the Bagrationi dynasty, the former royal family of Georgia. The surname “Grusin” is historically used in Slavic languages as an ethnonym for Georgians. His father, Henri, was a violinist of Jewish descent who grew up in Riga, Latvia—then part of the Russian Empire—before emigrating to the United States in 1913. His mother, Rosabelle, was a pianist, and both parents played a significant role in shaping his musical upbringing. Dave Grusin is the older brother of jazz keyboardist, composer and producer Don Grusin.
