Redbone is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1969 by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas. All members during the band’s commercial peak were of Chicano and Native American heritage, a background strongly reflected in their music, stage attire and album artwork. Rising to prominence in the 1970s, Redbone broke new ground in rock music and addressed social issues while achieving significant chart success. The band’s albums include Redbone (1970), Potlatch (1970), The Witch Queen of New Orleans (1971), Already Here (1972), Wovoka (1973), Beaded Dreams Through Turquoise Eyes (1974), Soliloquy in Red (1975), Cycles (1977) and Peace Pipe (2005). Redbone entered the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1974 with “Come and Get Your Love”, which was certified gold and sold more than one million copies. The song reached number five, making Redbone the first Native American band to achieve such success. They also gained attention with singles such as “We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee”, “The Witch Queen of New Orleans”, “Wovoka” and “Maggie”, which were particularly successful overseas. Pat Vegas has remained the band’s only consistent member since Lolly Vegas’s death in 2010. Brothers Patrick “Pat” Vegas (bass, vocals) and Candido “Lolly” Vasquez‑Vegas (guitar, vocals) were born in Coalinga, California, near Fresno.
