In the early 1960s, Gelling played in the groups The Rocking Hurricanes and The Rocking Strings together with Hans Kinds (rhythm guitar) and Willy Middel (bass). These bands mainly performed guitar‑driven music inspired by The Shadows. Around 1964, singer Harry Muskee joined the trio, shifting the repertoire toward blues and leading to the formation of Cuby and the Blizzards (C+B). The group quickly became popular within Amsterdam’s underground scene. In 1967, the band recorded an album with American blues singer and pianist Eddie Boyd (Praise the Blues), without Muskee and without Herman Brood, who had joined the band that same year as their pianist. They also toured briefly through the Netherlands with Van Morrison. Toward the end of the 1960s, Gelling made a temporary move to the band Tower, which included Boudewijn de Groot. Around that time he was invited to join John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers as Peter Green’s replacement, and Van Morrison also approached him, but Gelling ultimately chose to stay with Cuby and the Blizzards.
