Clannad

Clannad were an Irish group formed in 1970 in Gweedore, County Donegal, by siblings Ciarán, Pól and Máire (Moya) Brennan, together with their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan. Over the decades the band explored a wide range of musical styles. They began as an acoustic folk ensemble performing re‑arranged traditional Irish songs in the Irish language, later expanding their sound with original English‑language material, layered vocal harmonies, electronic keyboards and influences from rock, Celtic music, new age, smooth jazz and even Gregorian chant. Originally performing under the name Clann as Dobhar (“Family from Dore”), they shortened it to Clannad in 1973. By the end of the 1970s they had released three albums and toured across Europe and the United States. Between 1980 and 1982 the group performed as a six‑piece with their sister and niece Eithne (Enya). In 1982 they achieved international recognition with the single “Theme from Harry’s Game.” Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Clannad continued to experiment with new age and pop‑leaning sounds, and their work became closely associated with what would later be defined as the Celtic genre, making them key innovators in that field. After releasing fifteen albums, the band paused activities in 1997 to focus on solo projects.
