Manfred Mann’s Earth Band

Manfred Mann’s Earth Band are an English rock band formed in 1971 by South African musician Manfred Mann. Their best‑known hits include covers of Bruce Springsteen’s “For You”, “Blinded by the Light” and “Spirit in the Night”. After forming in 1971 and taking a brief hiatus in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Earth Band continue to perform and tour as of 2026. Keyboardist Manfred Mann first rose to prominence in the 1960s with his earlier band, which produced hits such as “Do Wah Diddy Diddy” and “The Mighty Quinn”. He later moved into jazz‑fusion territory with Manfred Mann Chapter Three before forming the Earth Band in 1971. Mann felt that Chapter Three had become too constrained by self‑imposed rules, was frustrated by relying mainly on Mike Hugg’s compositions, and found the large ensemble economically impractical. The new group was conceived with fewer restrictions, openness to outside material and a sound shaped by the varied musical backgrounds of its members. The original lineup consisted of Mick Rogers (guitar, vocals), Manfred Mann (keyboards, Minimoog synthesizer, vocals), Colin Pattenden (bass) and Chris Slade (drums, vocals). In its earliest phase, the band was sometimes billed simply as “Manfred Mann”, suggesting continuity with the 1960s group, and at other times as “Manfred Mann Chapter Three”, reflecting Mann’s most recent musical project.
