Ton Scherpenzeel (born 6 August 1952) is a Dutch keyboardist, composer, lyricist, and founding member of the Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. After his work with Kayak, he joined the British progressive rock band Camel. He also played for several years with the Dutch band Earth and Fire and released several solo albums. Later, he was associated with the Dutch vocal project Opus and worked as accompanist and keyboardist for Dutch comedian Youp van ‘t Hek. Scherpenzeel co-founded Kayak together with Pim Koopman and Max Werner, whom he met while studying at the Hilversum College of Music. The band evolved from an earlier student group called High Tide Formation, in which Scherpenzeel played bass guitar. He is the only member to have appeared on every Kayak album. Besides composing music, writing lyrics, and playing keyboards, he also plays accordion, bass guitar, and double bass. He provided backing vocals throughout Kayak’s history and sang lead vocals on the song Love’s Aglow from the original Merlin album. In 2021, Kayak released its 18th studio album, Out of This World. Later that year, Scherpenzeel announced the band’s Farewell Tour, coinciding with Kayak’s 50th anniversary. He also indicated that occasional reunion performances remained a possibility. Ton Scherpenzeel contributed keyboards to several Camel albums, including: Stationary Traveller (1984), Pressure Points: Live in Concert (1984), Dust and Dreams (1991), Rajaz (1999). He also performed with Camel during the band’s 2003 Farewell Tour.
