Fenton Lee Robinson (September 23, 1935 – November 25, 1997) was an American blues singer, songwriter and guitarist best known for his sophisticated Chicago blues style. Although never a major commercial success, he became highly respected among blues musicians and is now regarded as one of the most underrated blues artists of his generation. In 2023, he was posthumously inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame. Born near Greenwood, Mississippi, Robinson moved to Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of eighteen and recorded his first single, Tennessee Woman, in 1957. In 1959 he recorded As the Years Go Passing By, a song that would later become a blues standard and be covered by numerous artists. He settled in Chicago in 1962, where he developed his distinctive guitar style and established himself on the local blues scene. Robinson is best known for his signature song, Somebody Loan Me a Dime, first recorded in 1967. The song later gained wider recognition through a cover version by Boz Scaggs and has since become one of the most frequently performed songs in modern blues music. In 1974, Robinson released the acclaimed album Somebody Loan Me a Dime on Alligator Records. He followed it with I Hear Some Blues Downstairs (1977), which earned a Grammy Award nomination, and Nightflight (1984). These albums are considered among the finest recordings of the Chicago blues revival era. In addition to his solo work, Robinson contributed guitar parts to several recordings, including the original version of Texas Flood, later made famous by Stevie Ray Vaughan. Despite periods of personal hardship, Robinson remained active as a performer and guitar teacher throughout much of his career. He died in 1997 from complications related to brain cancer. Today, Fenton Robinson is remembered for his smooth vocals, elegant guitar playing and deeply expressive songwriting. His work continues to be admired by blues enthusiasts and musicians around the world.
