The Edgar Broughton Band

Edgar Broughton Band was a British blues‑rock group formed in Warwick in 1968, active in their original incarnation until 1976. The core lineup consisted of brothers Edgar Broughton (vocals, guitar) and Steve Broughton (drums), together with Arthur Grant (bass). At various times they were joined by additional musicians, most notably guitarist and keyboardist Victor Unitt. The band released five studio albums on the EMI Harvest label — including Sing Brother Sing, which reached #18 on the UK Albums Chart — as well as six singles, among them “Out Demons Out” (UK Singles Chart #39). A later studio album appeared on NEMS. The group reunited twice: from 1978 to 1982 under the name The Broughtons, releasing two further studio albums, and again from 2006 to 2010 for live performances featuring Edgar’s son Luke Broughton. The band began as a blues outfit under the name The Edgar Broughton Blues Band, performing for a small but loyal following around Warwick. As their music evolved toward the emerging psychedelic rock movement, they dropped “Blues” from their name and shifted their stylistic focus accordingly. In 1968, the group relocated to Notting Hill Gate, London, seeking broader opportunities and a recording contract. They were soon taken on by Blackhill Enterprises, who secured them a deal with Harvest Records, EMI’s progressive‑rock imprint, in December 1968. Their debut single, “Evil” backed with “Death of an Electric Citizen”, was released in June 1969 — notably the first single ever issued on the Harvest label.
