The Contortionist is an American progressive metal band from Indianapolis, Indiana, formed in 2007. The current lineup consists of Robby Baca (guitar), Cameron Maynard (guitar), Joey Baca (drums), Mike Lessard (vocals), Jordan Eberhardt (bass) and Eric Guenther (keyboards). The band has released four studio albums and three EPs, and signed with eOne Music and Good Fight Entertainment in early 2010. The band was formed in 2007 under the name At the Hands of Machines, with the following lineup: Jake Morris – vocals, Robby Baca – guitar, Cameron Maynard – guitar, Christopher Tilley – bass, Joey Baca – drums. Their first release, the EP Sporadic Movements, appeared later that year. After its release, the group adopted the name The Contortionist. The same lineup recorded the EP Shapeshifter, released in September 2008. Both early EPs showcased a deathcore‑oriented sound, distinct from the more progressive direction the band would later pursue. Following Shapeshifter, vocalist Jake Morris departed and was replaced by Dave Hoffman, who also contributed keyboards. With this lineup, the band entered Voltaic Recording Studio in early 2009 and released their third EP, Apparition, in September 2009. While still rooted in deathcore, Apparition introduced progressive metal elements that would become central to the band’s later work.
