Vollenweider was born in Zürich, Switzerland, on 4 October 1953. He is the son of Hans Vollenweider (1918–1993), an organist and composer, while his mother worked as a painter. In 1971 he married Beata, a kindergarten teacher, and together they have three children: sons Jonathan and Sebastian, and daughter Noëmi. He first encountered the harp in 1975. Finding traditional versions too restrictive for the ideas he wanted to express, he began modifying the instrument and ultimately created his own electro‑acoustic harp, which became central to his musical identity. During the mid‑1970s, Vollenweider formed the trio Poesie und Musik with bassist Rene Bardet and guitarist Orlando Valentini, performing musical interpretations of poetry by François Villon and Heinrich Heine. He left the group in 1978. Around the same time, he also composed music for film projects, particularly nature documentaries, further developing the atmospheric style that would define his later work.
