Brown Sabbath

Beto Martinez, guitarist for the Austin‑based funk group Brownout, likes to point out that Black Sabbath always had a natural sense of rhythm. In his words, their music “carries a real groove.” For a band rooted in Latin soul, rare groove, and funk, the Black Sabbath songbook might seem like an unexpected direction. Yet Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath turns out to be something unusual: a heavy‑rock tribute created by musicians from a different musical world that never feels like a gimmick. The album keeps the raw force of the original songs while adding a fresh rhythmic pulse. It hits hard — and it definitely swings. One reason the project works so well is that Brownout are seasoned players. Seven of the group’s eight members also perform with the Grammy‑winning Grupo Fantasma, a band that has backed Prince on multiple occasions and collaborated with artists such as Spoon, Daniel Johnston, and Maceo Parker, the legendary saxophonist associated with James Brown, Funkadelic, and Parliament. These musicians know how to build a groove and how to reshape classic material without losing its edge.
