Sonata arctica

Sonata Arctica is a Finnish power metal band from Kemi, known for their melodic songwriting, high‑energy performances and distinctive blend of speed, atmosphere and strong vocal harmonies. The group began in the mid‑1990s as a hard rock outfit called Tricky Beans, later renamed Tricky Means, before fully embracing power metal and adopting the name Sonata Arctica. The current lineup features drummer Tommy Portimo, vocalist Tony Kakko, keyboardist Henrik Klingenberg, guitarist Elias Viljanen, and bassist Pasi Kauppinen. With the exception of Portimo, every member in the band’s history has also contributed backing vocals, adding to their signature layered sound. As of 2024, Sonata Arctica has released eleven full‑length studio albums, issued through Spinefarm Records, Nuclear Blast, and later Atomic Fire. Sonata Arctica was founded in Kemi by drummer Tommy Portimo and guitarists Jani Liimatainen and Marko Paasikoski. Vocalist Tony Kakko joined at the end of 1995, followed by bassist Pentti Peura in 1996. Under their early name Tricky Beans, the band played hard rock rather than the power metal style they would later become known for. Kakko has recalled that when he joined, Paasikoski described their direction as “a mixture of Megadeth and Spin Doctors” — a far cry from the symphonic, fast‑paced sound they would eventually develop.
