Sandy Denny/Fairport Convention

Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny (6 January 1947 – 21 April 1978) was an English singer and musician best known as the lead vocalist of the folk‑rock group Fairport Convention. She is often regarded as one of the defining British folk‑rock singer‑songwriters of her era. Denny first came to wider attention during a brief period with the Strawbs before joining Fairport Convention in 1968. She remained with the band until 1969, contributing to some of their most influential recordings. In 1970 she founded Fotheringay, a short‑lived but highly regarded project, and soon after turned her focus to a solo career. Between 1971 and 1977 she released four solo albums — The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous. She also appeared on Led Zeppelin’s Led Zeppelin IV in 1971, performing a duet with Robert Plant on “The Battle of Evermore,” the only guest vocal ever featured on a Led Zeppelin studio album. Denny died in 1978 at the age of 31 from head injuries sustained after a fall down a flight of stairs.
