Benatar’s debut album, In the Heat of the Night (1979), marked her breakthrough in North America, particularly in Canada, where it reached number three on the album chart. The album produced two hit singles: “Heartbreaker” and “We Live for Love”, the latter written by her lead guitarist and future husband, Neil Giraldo. Her second album, Crimes of Passion (1980), became her most successful release, peaking at number two in North America and France and earning 4× platinum certification in the US and 5× platinum in Canada. Its single “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” reached the top ten in both countries and became her signature song. Her third album, Precious Time (1981), topped the US Albums Chart and became her first top‑ten album in Australia. Its single “Fire and Ice” performed strongly in the US and Canada. Benatar’s fourth album, Get Nervous (1982), sold less than its predecessors but included the North American hit “Shadows of the Night”. Benatar’s sound shifted toward a more atmospheric pop style in the mid‑1980s. Her 1983 single “Love Is a Battlefield” became her biggest international hit, reaching number one in the Netherlands, Australia and the US Rock Tracks chart, and number five on the US Hot 100. The live album Live from Earth (1983), which featured the song, became her best‑selling release in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands.
