Warpaint is an American indie rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 2004. The band’s current lineup consists of Emily Kokal (vocals, guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals, guitar), Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass, vocals), and Stella Mozgawa (drums). Warpaint was formed in Los Angeles on Valentine’s Day in 2004. The original lineup included childhood friends Theresa Wayman and Emily Kokal, along with sisters Jenny Lee Lindberg and Shannyn Sossamon. During their first three years together, the band developed a number of songs, including “Stars,” “Beetles,” and “Elephants,” which later appeared on their debut EP. According to Jenny Lee Lindberg, the group was originally called World War 4 before adopting the name Warpaint, inspired by a song of the same name that would later appear on their debut album, The Fool. In December 2007, Warpaint began recording their debut EP, Exquisite Corpse, with producer Jacob Bercovici. Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer contributed drums and guitar during the recording sessions. The EP was later mixed and mastered by John Frusciante. Warpaint independently released Exquisite Corpse in 2008. The EP gained local recognition and reached the top spot on Amoeba Records’ Los Angeles local artist chart. In 2009, it was reissued worldwide by Manimal Vinyl. That same year, Australian drummer Stella Mozgawa joined the band, completing the lineup that remains in place today. Shortly afterward, Warpaint signed with Rough Trade Records and began extensive tours across the United States and Europe, including performances as an opening act for The xx. In December 2010, the BBC selected Warpaint as a nominee for its Sound of 2011 poll. The band also appeared on the cover of Beat magazine’s Winter 2010 issue. During the same year, Warpaint recorded a cover version of David Bowie’s “Ashes to Ashes” for We Were So Turned On, a tribute album released in support of the charity War Child. Warpaint is known for its atmospheric sound, blending indie rock, dream pop, psychedelic rock, and post-punk influences. Their music is characterized by layered guitars, hypnotic rhythms, and ethereal vocal harmonies, earning them a distinctive place in the contemporary alternative music scene.
