Scott Agster

Scott Agster is an American trombonist and arranger based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Since relocating to the city in 2005, he has become a prominent figure in its contemporary music landscape, performing regularly across genres including funk, soul, jazz, and Latin music. Agster is known for his versatility as both a performer and arranger, contributing horn lines and section writing to numerous Minneapolis‑based ensembles. Agster’s career includes touring with the Doc Severinsen Orchestra, Davina and the Vagabonds, and the neo‑soul group Nooky Jones. He has maintained a long association with Salsa del Soul, performing with the ensemble for more than two decades. In later years, he became a full‑time member of Michael Bland’s Urban Classic and joined the R&B group CoMingl. His work also extends to collaborations with KAJ Productions’ Men of Motown, Adam Bohanan, and occasional performances with St. Paul Peterson’s Minneapolis Funk AllStars. Across these projects, Agster’s horn arrangements have become a recognizable element of his musical output. Agster is widely regarded for his commitment to the Minneapolis music community, often emphasizing the depth of talent within the city’s performing scene. His work reflects an ongoing dedication to both ensemble performance and the development of horn‑driven musical traditions. Minneapolis Horn Power is a musical project created by Scott Agster to highlight the city’s longstanding tradition of horn‑centered performance within funk, soul, and related genres. The project is built around a five‑piece funk horn section supported by a rhythm section composed of established Minneapolis musicians, many of whom have contributed to the evolution of the “Minneapolis Sound.” The concept for Minneapolis Horn Power emerged in late 2023, when Agster recognized the potential for a collaborative production that would showcase both his writing and the breadth of talent within the city’s musical community. The project draws inspiration from influential Minneapolis horn performers such as Eric Leeds and The Hornheads, integrating stylistic elements associated with the region’s distinctive blend of funk, pop, and soul.
