Woodstock 1969

The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, commonly known as Woodstock, was a music festival held from August 15 to 18, 1969, on Max Yasgur’s dairy farm in Bethel, New York, located about 60 miles (95 km) southwest of the town of Woodstock. Promoted as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music” and sometimes referred to as the Woodstock Rock Festival, it drew an audience of more than 460,000 people. Thirty‑two acts performed outdoors despite overcast weather and intermittent rain. The event became one of the largest music festivals in history and is widely regarded as the defining musical moment of the 1960s counterculture. The festival is considered a pivotal point in popular music history and a landmark event for the silent generation and early baby boomers. Its cultural impact was reinforced by the 1970 documentary film Woodstock, its accompanying soundtrack album, and Joni Mitchell’s song “Woodstock”, which became a major hit for both Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Matthews Southern Comfort. Anniversary events bearing the Woodstock name were organized for the 10th, 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Woodstock at number 19 on its list of the “50 Moments That Changed the History of Rock and Roll”. In 2017, the original festival site was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Woodstock was conceived by Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman and John P. Roberts. Roberts and Rosenman provided the financial backing, while Lang brought experience from co‑organizing the 1968 Miami Pop Festival, which had drawn an estimated 25,000 attendees. Early in 1969, Roberts and Rosenman were based in New York as planning for the event began.
