Flying Colours

Flying Colors is an American supergroup composed of Mike Portnoy, Dave LaRue, Casey McPherson, Neal Morse, and Steve Morse. The band’s mission, envisioned by executive producer Bill Evans, is to combine complex musicianship with accessible songwriting. Signed to Mascot Label Group, Flying Colors has released three studio albums and three live albums, achieving both commercial success and critical acclaim. In 2008, Evans drafted a concept for a band that would merge sophisticated musical elements—complex compositions and virtuoso performances—with mainstream, melodic songwriting. His idea was to channel that complexity through a charismatic pop‑oriented singer/songwriter, keep the songs concise, and incorporate humor. Evans approached Neal Morse (solo artist, Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic, The Neal Morse Band), Dave LaRue (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai), Steve Morse (Steve Morse Band, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple, Kansas), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic), and producer Peter Collins (Rush, Bon Jovi) to bring the project to life. Kerry Livgren, who had previously worked with both Neal and Steve, was also considered but ultimately ruled out after suffering a stroke in 2009. The singer/songwriter position remained open for some time, as Evans could not find a suitable candidate despite reviewing more than 100 possibilities. Portnoy eventually suggested Casey McPherson, who at the time was signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records. McPherson’s band Alpha Rev had recently released New Morning, which spent 17 weeks in the Billboard Top 10.
