Lhasa de Sela

Lhasa de Sela (September 27, 1972 – January 1, 2010), known simply as Lhasa, was an American‑Mexican‑Canadian singer‑songwriter. Raised between Mexico and the United States, she later divided her adult life between Canada and France. Her debut album, La Llorona, became a major success in Canada, earning Platinum certification along with both a Félix Award and a Juno Award. After the breakthrough of La Llorona, Lhasa joined the Lilith Fair tour and later spent time in France performing with her sisters in a circus troupe, lending her distinctive, smoky voice to the show’s musical atmosphere. She lived for a period in Marseille, where she continued writing new material, before returning to Montreal to create her second album, The Living Road. She toured widely in support of the record and collaborated with numerous musicians. In 2005, BBC Radio 3 named her the best world‑music artist representing the Americas. During this period she also published a book reflecting on her experiences traveling and performing. Lhasa completed a third album, simply titled Lhasa, but in 2008 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After nearly two years of treatment, she passed away on January 1, 2010. In January 2012, artists who had worked with her gathered in Montreal to present a memorial concert celebrating her music and legacy.
