The Gathering are a Dutch rock band formed in 1989 in Oss, North Brabant. The current lineup features founding brothers René Rutten (guitars) and Hans Rutten (drums), along with Hugo Prinsen Geerligs (bass) and Frank Boeijen (keyboards). Former lead vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen is presently active as a touring member. The band’s earliest releases were rooted in atmospheric doom metal, drawing influence from extreme metal acts such as Celtic Frost and Hellhammer. After several changes in vocalists, The Gathering achieved their breakthrough in 1995 with Mandylion, their first album featuring Anneke van Giersbergen and their first to enter the Dutch charts. With Van Giersbergen’s arrival, the band’s sound gradually shifted away from gothic metal toward a style influenced by shoegaze, post‑rock, and trip hop, beginning with their fifth studio album How to Measure a Planet? in 1998.
