Steve Winwood

Stephen Lawrence Winwood (born 12 May 1948) is an English musician and songwriter whose work spans blue‑eyed soul, rhythm and blues, blues rock and pop rock. Primarily known as a keyboard player, guitarist and vocalist with a distinctive soulful high tenor voice, Winwood also plays mandolin, electric bass, saxophone, flute, drums and percussion. Winwood first rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s as a key member of three major bands: the Spencer Davis Group (1964–1967), Traffic (1967–1969; 1970–1974) and Blind Faith (1969). His solo career flourished in the 1980s, producing several hit singles, including “While You See a Chance” (1980) from Arc of a Diver and “Valerie” (1982) from Talking Back to the Night — the latter becoming a hit again when remixed for his 1987 compilation Chronicles. His 1986 album Back in the High Life marked the peak of his commercial success, featuring hit singles such as “Back in the High Life Again”, “The Finer Things” and the US Billboard Hot 100 number‑one single “Higher Love”. He topped the Hot 100 again with “Roll with It” (1988) from the album of the same name, with “Don’t You Know What the Night Can Do?” and “Holding On” also charting highly that year. Although his run of hit singles slowed after the 1980s, Winwood continued to release new material. His most recent studio album, Nine Lives, was released in 2008.
