Robben Ford is widely regarded as one of the leading electric guitarists of his generation, celebrated especially for his blues playing and his ability to move effortlessly between musical styles. A five‑time Grammy nominee, he has worked with an extraordinary range of artists, including Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Witherspoon, Miles Davis, George Harrison, Phil Lesh, Bonnie Raitt, Michael McDonald, Bob Dylan, John Mayall, Gregg Allman, John Scofield, Susan Tedeschi, Keb’ Mo’, Larry Carlton, Mavis Staples, Brad Paisley, and many others. Born in 1951 in Woodlake, California, and raised in Ukiah, Ford grew up in a musical household as the third of four sons. His father, Charles, had been a country and western singer and guitarist, while his mother, Kathryn, played piano and sang. Robben’s first instrument was the saxophone, which he began playing at age ten and continued into his early twenties.
