Gamma Ray

Gamma Ray is a German power metal band from Hamburg, founded and fronted by Kai Hansen in 1989 after his departure from Helloween. Hansen serves as the band’s lead vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter. Between 1990 and 2014, Gamma Ray recorded eleven studio albums. In 1988, after four years with the German power metal band Helloween, guitarist and songwriter Kai Hansen decided to leave the group. Hansen stated that Helloween had become too large and difficult for him to manage, although the band’s financial issues and conflicts with their record company, Noise Records, likely contributed as well. After leaving, Hansen worked in the studio with Blind Guardian and, in 1989, decided to start his own project with longtime friend Ralf Scheepers, former vocalist of Tyran Pace. What began as a two‑man collaboration soon expanded into a full band with the addition of Uwe Wessel on bass and Mathias Burchardt on drums. This first lineup of Gamma Ray naturally carried a sound reminiscent of Helloween’s style from that era.
